Episode 19: What a picture AI really sees

1. 1 Think puzzle piecesMany image AIs cut a picture into small squares, called patches, and look for patterns across them. It does not look at a photo the way you do.Try: Ask: is this a big-picture question or a detail question?

3. 3 Count it yourselfOne AI guide says counts of objects in a picture can be approximate, especially with many small objects. Research says AIs that draw pictures often miss the number you ask for.Try: Count the objects with your own eyes before you use the number.
4. 4 Give it a good pictureGuides warn about mistakes with low-quality, rotated or very small images. Use a clear, upright picture. If there is small writing, make it bigger.Try: Check: clear, upright, not tiny.
5. 5 Double-check exact spotsOne guide says exact positions are hard for the AI, such as where each chess piece sits on a board. Look at the picture yourself when the place matters.
